ハブの恩返し

どうしても「こわい」というイメージの強いハブですが、今回はハブに関するお話をご紹介したいと思います。このお話しにでてくるハブはこわくないし、なんかほっこりするようなお話しですよ＾＾

昔々のことです。
百姓をしている女の人が豆腐を作るために海に水を汲みに行きました。手桶に水を入れそれを頭に乗せて帰る途中、通り道のすぐ側のアダン林からパチパチという音がしてきました。

「なんだろう」と不思議に思い、恐る恐る音のする方を覗き込みました。見るとアダン林の奥で煙が上がり、その煙の下では勢い良くアダンの枯れ葉が激しく燃え上がっています。

「火事だ。今のうちに消さないと大変なことになる」

女の人は海水を入れて重くなった手桶を持って林の中へとかけだしました。
すると燃え上がる炎の囲まれるように、逃げ遅れた大ハブがいました。
「さあ、助けてやるからね。もう噛み付いたりしたらダメだよ」
と頭に乗せていた手桶の中の海水をかけて火を消しました。
念の為にともう一度海から水を汲んで戻ってきた時には大ハブの姿はどこにもありませんでした。

ある日、その女の人は赤ん坊を連れて芋を掘りに畑へと行きました。
作業のために赤ん坊から離れていると泣き出してしまいます。そばまで行って抱いていると泣き止むのですが、作業を始めるとまた泣き出してしまい、作業がはかどらず困ってしまいました。
しかたがないので、赤ん坊が泣き出してもかまわず作業を続けることにしました。
しばらくは泣き続けていた赤ん坊ですが、いつのまにか泣かなくなり、それどころか笑い声が聞こえるではありませんか。

「どうしたの？さっきまであんなに泣いていたのに、今度は一人で機嫌よく笑ったりして」
と言いながら赤ん坊のそばに戻ってみると、赤ん坊のそばには大きなハブがいました。あわててハブを追い払う棒を探したのですが見つかりません。

だけど、赤ん坊は声を出して笑っているので不思議に思いよく見てみると、赤ん坊は大ハブの首のところをギュッとつかんで、大ハブのシッポが目の前で揺れる度に笑っているではありませんか。
赤ん坊に首をつかまれている大ハブこそ火事の時に助けた大ハブだったのです。

大ハブは助けてもらったお礼にと赤ん坊のお守りをしてくれていたのです。
女の人があきれて見ていると、大ハブがじゃべり出しました。

「この前のご恩返しに、アナタにハブに噛まれないおまじないを教えてあげましょう。ハブと会う危険性がある場所では、『潮汲みの子孫だよ。水汲みの子孫だよ。上の道を通ったら、下の道を通れ。下の道を通ったら上の道を通れ。ジュホー、ジュホー』と、三回くり返し言って下さい。そう唱えれば、決して噛まれる事はありませんよ」

と、言い残して去って行きました。それ以来、その女の人はどんなにハブの多い場所でもハブにかまれることはありませんでした。

大ハブも赤ん坊につかまれて以来、首が細くくびれてしまったそうな・・・。
