沖縄の民話　「ままこ伝説」①

宮古島にある「下地島の通り池」に、古くから伝わる「継子（ままこ）伝説」という話があることは以前紹介しました。

小さな男の子のいる男のところに後妻として入った女が、やがて実子を産みます。
連れ子の男の子と実子の男の子のふたりは、血は繋がっていないものの、仲良く兄弟として暮らしていました。
始めは連れ子の兄も可愛いがっていた女でしたが、実子が産まれると我が子だけを可愛がり、兄を疎ましく思いはじめます。
ある日、女は「通り池」に兄を落とすことをたくらみ、兄弟を連れて「通り池」に散歩に行きます。
日が落ちて、池のほとりで寝ていた兄弟のうち、女は兄を持ち上げ池に放りこみました。
しかし兄はそのたくらみを感じていて、あらかじめ弟と自分の服をすり替えていたのです。
女は池に投げ入れたのが実子と知ると、泣き叫び自分も池に飛び込みました。

この話には、部分的に少し違う話も伝わっています。

池のほとりに兄弟が寝る前、女は兄には池から遠い所へ、実子へは池のそばで寝るように言いつけます。
兄弟は女の言いつけどおり兄が池から遠い所へ、弟は池のそばへと並んで寝転びます。
女はふたりを置いて海へと降りていきました。
しばらくして、弟が兄に言います。「兄ちゃん、こっちはでこぼこして、背中が痛いよ。」
兄は「そうか、じゃあこっちはでこぼこしてなくて上等だから、兄ちゃんと代われ。」
ふたりは場所を交代します。
夜が深け2人が寝入ったころ、女が戻ってきました。
女は池から遠いところに寝る子を抱き上げ、そのまま池へと放りこみました。
女は残った子を急いで抱いて走り出し、池から遠ざかりました。
手に抱いた子が目を覚まし、女に尋ねました。「母さん、弟は連れて行かなくていいの？」
女はそこで実子を池に投げ入れたことに気づき、狂わんばかりに泣き叫んだ。女は実子の名を呼びながら、自分もそのまま一直線に池に飛び込んだという。

この通り池は、沖縄旅行で来る観光客には人気のダイビングスポットですが、地元の人は誰も近寄らない場所だそうです。水面から地上まで10mもの絶壁で囲まれており、誤って池に落ちたなら自力で這い上がるのはほぼ不可能と言われています。
自然の造形美を感じさせる場所でありながら、自殺の名所としての側面を持っています。
「継子伝説」は、そういった行為を躊躇させるための造話という説もあります。
