沖縄の民話　「キジムナーの仕返し」

沖縄本島南部の宇江城(うえぐすく※現在の糸満市)に伝わる「キジムナーの仕返し」という民話があります。

むかし、サバムイ（鮫殿）という漁師がいました。
サバムイがある夜、海で漁をしていると、すぐ傍で同じように魚を獲っている人がいました。見たことのないその人は、それからサバムイが夜遅く漁に出るたびに、やってくるのでした。そしてその男がいる夜は、魚がよく獲れました。
そのうち二人は仲良くなって、毎日のように一緒に漁をしました。
ところが男は自分の名前も言わないし、顔も話し方も普通の人たちと違っていたので、サバムイは男が人間ではないかもしれないと思い始めました。
やがてサバムイは「あれはヤナムン（沖縄の言葉で妖怪のこと）が化けている。このままあの男と付き合うと悪いことが起こる」と考え、男の家をつきとめることにしました。

ある日漁が終わると、サバムイは男のあとをつけます。男は山の上の丘に昇っていき、大きなクワの木に吸い込まれるように姿を消したのです。
「やっぱりあいつは人間ではねえ。あのクワの木に住むキジムナーが化けていたんだ」
キジムナーとは、沖縄でいうカッパに似た妖怪で、魚とりが上手で古い木に住み着くと云われている生き物です。
サバムイは家に帰ると、男がクワの木に吸い込まれたことを妻に言い、こう頼みました。
「明日俺が漁に行ってる間に、お前は干し草やワラを用意してクワの木を燃やしてくれ」
次の夜、サバムイと男は、いつものように漁に出かけました。魚がとれはじめたとき、
「どうもおかしい。家のこげる匂いがする」と、男が言いました。

「そんなことないさ。気のせいだろうよ」とサバムイは気をそらせようとしますが、
「いや、たしかに匂う。こうしてはいられない」と男は漁をやめ、急いですぐに帰っていきました。
大きなクワの木はまっ黒に焼け落ち、その日からキジムナーの男は姿を消してしまいました。サバムイは、これで妖怪を退治したと大喜びしました。
家を失くしたキジムナーは、住処になる木を探して、宇江城より北にある国頭(くにかみ)まで消えてしまいました。
それから何年もの月日がたったある日、サバムイは首里にいる幼なじみに会いにいきました。久しぶりに友だちと会って酒をかわすうちに、サバムイは気が大きくなってきて、あの男の話やクワの木を妻に焼かせて追い出したことを上機嫌で話しました。
話を聞いていた幼なじみの友だちは、急に怖い顔になって怒り出しました。
「あんたは仲良くなった男にそんなひどいことをしたのか！男がキジムナーだったとしても、あんたにいったい何をしたというんだ！あんたは悪い男だ！」

サバムイが驚いてよく見ると、目の前にいるのは幼なじみの友だちではなく、あのキジムナーだったのです。キジムナーは持っていた小刀で、サバムイを切り付けました。
「痛い！」サバムイは血を流しながら村へ帰り、苦しみながら死んでしまいました。
沖縄のキジムナーは、ガジュマルやクワの大木を住処としています。人間に害を与えるどころか、逆に幸福をもたらしてくれる生き物でした。
しかし人間が裏切ったりひどい仕打ちをしたりしたときには、恐ろしい仕返しをするのです。
サバムイはキジムナーを妖怪と邪推して家を燃やしたことでキジムナーの仕返しにあい、命を落としてしまいました。

沖縄旅行に行くと、ガジュマルやクワの木々がそこここにあります。穏やかな自然美をみせるこの風景のどこかに、キジムナーがいるのでしょうか。
