ミルク神は沖縄のお祭りでふっくら顔の「豊穣神」として登場する優しい神様です。
あのイリオモテヤマネコで有名な「西表島　竹富町」の昔ばなしとして今も語り継がれているお話です。

昔々、ミルク神とカーサ神は互いにお隣の村に住んでいました。
カーサ神は「働いて苦労するよりは、働かないで人の物を取って食べたほうがいい」
といっていました。ミルク神はカーサ神と違いたいそうな働き者で
「働けば働くほど幸せになる。働くことは大切なことだ。」と村人に教えていました。

ある日、カーサ神はミルク神にいいました。「こうしてあまり近くに住んでいるとお互いにおもしろくない
こともある、蓮華のつぼみを持ち先に咲かせたほうが好きな土地を取るというのはどうだろう？」と
提案をしました。素直なミルク神は「いいよ。」とカーサ神の申し出を受けることにしました。
二人の神は蓮華の蕾を持って静かに目を閉じて座りました。
すると、徳の高いミルク神の蓮華の方が先に咲いたのです。薄目をあけてその様子をみていたカーサ神はあろうことか、自分の蕾とミルク神との花をこっそりと取り替えたのです。
「さあ、私の花が先に咲いたぞ！ここから立って見える土地は全て私のものだ。ミルク神はここから見えない土地へ出ていけ！」するとミルク神は「見えないところの土地は私にくれるのか。」といい
低いところの土地をとりました、低地の方が人もたくさん住み、土地もよく肥えて作物もよくとれました。

ある日、カーサ神はミルク神の村が栄えるのがいまいましく、大量のねずみを作りミルク神の土地に放ったのです。ミルク神は猫を作りネズミを退治させました。失敗したカーサ神は、次にイノシシを作って畑を荒らさせました。ミルク神は犬を作りカーサ神の山へイノシシを追い払ったのです。
こういうわけで、ネズミとイノシシを作ったカーサ神は顔がとんがっていて、犬と猫を作ったミルク神が丸顔なのです。

その後もカーサ神の嫌がらせは止まず、「このままでは殺されるかもしれない」と思ったミルク神は船を作り遠い島に移り住み、その島の王様になりました。そして島民に「人の物を一つ取ると十倍の損」と教えたので
島はどんどん栄えていきました。一方カーサ神の村は何も作らないので相変わらず栄えませんでした。
そこでカーサ神の村人はミルク神の島に移り、栄えている理由を教わろうとしました。

ミルクの島に着くと、船着き場近くの畑でミルク神の島民が言い争っているのが聞こえてきました。
カーサ神の村人は「ミルクの島でも争いがあるのか？」と不思議に思いよく聞いてみると、
畑の境界線が曲がっているので境界線上にある土地がどちらのものか？と言い争っていたのです。

カーサ神の村人は間にはいり「それなら真ん中でわければよいではないか」というと
「いや、私たちはミルク神様から人の物を取ると十の損と教えられております。お互いに人の土地と取ることなどできません。」と言って互いに一歩も譲らないのです。
これを聞いたカーサ神の村人は呆れて自分の土地にかえっていったということです。

カーサ神がネズミに似てズルい様子や、困り果てた丸顔のミルク神がとっても臨場感たっぷりに描かれていて面白いですね。ちなみにミルク神は女性であったと言い伝えられています。
なるほど、だから丸顔で優しいお顔なのですね、納得です。
