宮古島の始まり

宮古島の民話

　沖縄旅行でも近年人気の訪問先宮古島。宮古島は、沖縄本島よりさらに南西に約290km離れた場所に位置しています。沖縄県内では、沖縄本島、西表島、石垣島に次いで4番目に大きな島です。また、宮古島は宮古島諸島のなかでいちばん大きく、宮古島諸島には他にも、宮古島、池間島、大神島、来間島、伊良部島、下地島、多良間島、水納島があります。

　1317年の中国元の時代の歴史書に初めて宮古島の名が登場しています。このころ宮古島では多くの豪族がいて、権力争いを繰り広げていたようです。さて、宮古島の始まりとしてこんな神話が残されているようですよ。

「宮古島の始まり」

大昔、天地が定まらず青海原の波はゆらぎゆらいで宮古島の形もない時、天の御国なる天帝（あめのてだ）は天の岩柱の端を折って弥久美神（やぐみのかみ）に授け、「下界の風水のよい所にこれを投げ、入れて島を造りなさい」と命じました。
弥久美神が、天に掛かる虹の上から青々とした大海原に投げ入れると、 岩柱は固まって宮古の島ができました。天帝はその島に赤土を下し、古意角（こいつの）という男の神に、「下界に下りて、あの島に美しい人の世を建て守護神になりなさい」と言いました。古意角は、早速下界に出発しようとしましたが、その前に天帝 に言いました、
「我に足りないもう片方の身体をください」と。天帝が、
「五体すべて揃っているのに何が不足なのか」と問うと、古意角は、
「すべて陽があれば必ず陰があり、陰があれば陽があります。」と申し上げると、天帝は、
「なるほどそれなら姑依玉という女神を連れて行きなさい。」と言いました。

古意角・姑依玉の両神は、豪勇の盛加神（もりかのかみ）を始め、多くの神々を従えて天の夜虹橋を渡り、七色の綾雲に乗って地上に降りました。彼らは漲水天久崎（ぴゃるみずあめくざき）の地に宮居を定め、宗達（むにだる）・嘉玉（かだま）のという男の神と女の神を生みました。ところが、宮古島は赤土ばかりで、作物がうまく育ちません。天帝は黒土を下すと、それから は五穀が良く実り、食物に不自由しないようになりました。
十幾年かが過ぎ宗達、嘉玉が大きくなった頃、天帝が古意角、姑依玉 に言いました。ｃ

「お前達は、人の世の続くかぎり末長く島建ての神と崇められ、お前達の世は天に輝く太陽のように栄えるだろう」そして、紅葉を身にまとった木装神（きふそうのかみ）という男の神と、青草を身にまとった草装神（ふさふそうのかみ）という女の神を使わせました。古意角、姑依玉は喜んで、宗達には草装神と結婚させ、嘉玉 は木装神と結婚させました。宗達神夫妻には東仲宗根の地を与え、嘉玉神夫妻には西仲宗根の地を与えました。やがて宗達神は世直真主（よなねしのまぬず）という男の子を 、木装神は素意麻娘司（そいまらつかさ）という女の子を生みました。こさらに子孫が増えて宮古島の住民になったということです。
