　17世紀半ばの頃、大神島に、見たこともない大きな外国の船がやってきました。 その船を最初に見つけたのは、大神島に住む２人の兄弟でした。２人は恐ろしくなって洞窟の奥に隠れてしまいます。その大きな外国の船から外国の船員たち島に上がると、島の家々を襲い、食べ物や家畜を奪うと、島の人たちを殺してしまいました。船がいなくなると、兄弟が洞窟の外に出てきました。しかし、島人はみんな殺されてしまっていて、生き残ったのはこの兄弟２人でした。この2人の子孫が現在の島民の先祖になったということです。

　さて海賊 キッドとは本名はウィリアム・キッドといい、１６９６年から１６９９年に海賊行為を重ね、１７０１年絞首刑にされた実在の人物です。スコットランド生まれの元商人で、海賊を取り締まる役でしたが、そのうち自身が海賊となってしまいます。略奪した財宝のほとんどは無人島や人気のない海岸の洞窟に埋めたと言われています。キッドが財宝を隠したといわれている島は、大神島や宝島をはじめカリブ海、インド洋上の島、ベトナムの2つの島など世界中にあります。アメリカのガーディナーズ島やカナダのオーク島では、実際に宝探しを行って金貨などが発見されています。

　 1966年に新聞で、財宝の隠し場所を大神島とした記事が掲載されたことから、多くの人が財宝を求めて大神島を訪れました。立入禁止の聖域を荒らすといった出来事が相次ぎました。関係者の間で原因不明の病気や事故などが連発したことから 、神聖な島を荒らした祟りを受けたと伝えられています。
